Film and edit a short publicity video

John Law Media is small (tiny, actually) publishing house based in Scotland. We publish somewhat literary crime fiction. We’re not very successful, but we enjoy what we do. We’re looking for someone to cast, stage, shoot and edit a short (about 1 minute 30 seconds) video advert for one of our books. The video will be distributed online (via YouTube, Vimeo, our own web site, etc.). The final deliverable should be designed to look good when shown in full screen mode on a PC, Mac or tablet. The book is Wasp-Waisted by David Barrie, part of our “Noir Chic” collection. It is a lingerie-themed crime story that takes place in contemporary Paris. As the “noir chic” label suggests, it is not a gritty, down-in-the-gutters tale but a classy upscale murder mystery. If you’re interested, here’s the Amazon listing for the book: [login to view URL] The short video should show the following: a young, attractive European woman, alone in elegant surroundings, dressed only in lingerie and stockings. The woman must remain mysterious – at no point should her face be fully shown. In the course of the video she is preparing to go out (without, however, getting dressed): putting on lipstick, choosing and checking her earrings (once on), and slipping on a pair of high heels (and anything else that seems appropriately alluring). This should be filmed languorously, with the camera dwelling upon the woman’s body, gestures and lingerie. Once the heels are on she reaches for a folded piece of cloth on a flat surface (a table or dressing table), folds it open to reveal a pistol (not a revolver), picks it up and then walks slowly and purposefully away from the camera, the pistol held casually but visibly by her side. At which point the screen goes black and the book cover appears. A few seconds after its appearance a female voice (ideally with a French accent) says “noir chic”, in a seductive half-whisper. A few seconds later, with the book cover still filling the screen, the video ends. At all times the video should be classy and sensual: nothing vulgar, nothing trashy, nothing provocative. It should look like an advert for upscale perfume or lingerie. At no point should the action look hurried. There is background music from the start of the video to the end of the live action section. The music stops as the book cover is shown. The music to be used is a section of the opening Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations. It lasts for 1 minute 13 seconds, which therefore dictates the length of the live action sequence. We will provide the music (an MP3 file). All rights in the video should be signed over to us. Whenever possible we will mention the creative team behind the video (and the identity of the actress, if desired) when we post the video online (unless you would rather we did not) Our assumption is that a video such as this can be shot and edited with simple tools and equipment and still look like it cost a fortune. Prove us right and you’ll get the job!
