Short Essay on Traditional Slave Narratives and Neo-Slave Narratives

Choose two of the texts that we've read and write a 750-1,250-word academic essay that compares the two works that you've selected. You must choose one traditional slave narrative (Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass or Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl) and one neo-slave narrative (Kindred or The Underground Railroad). In your essay, you must either select a passage (150-200 words) or a chapter from each of the assigned readings that you have chosen and provide a critical interpretation of them, paying special attention to their formal attributes (e.g., style, grammar, syntax, tropes, literary devices), cultural or historical implications (e.g., their statuses as traditional slave and neo-slave narratives), and their bearings on things/events outside of the texts. When grading your essays, I'll be looking for all the qualities of an excellent essay: introduction and thesis; logical organization; specific and complete paragraph development; clear expression on the sentence level; clean copy; perfect MLA documentation; direct engagement with the text (i.e., quoting from the text to show that it does the things that you say it does). Physical Requirements: 750-1,250 words; Times New Roman font (12 pt.); include a minimum of two (2) articles from a reputable, peer-reviewed academic journal; double-spaced; one-inch margins; adhere to MLA style.
