Change action url for contact form 7

I am trying to integrate our custom built API with a client's WP form using contact form 7. The API requires me to change the action URL of the form but I can't seem to do this. I have tried making changes to the functions file as per a load of posts I read but nothing seems to do the trick. I need someone to explain to me how to do this or show me how I can get this changed with specific instructions.
