I would personally create a new table to store votes with IP address, date, (user_id, if exists) and [object id/item id], and support IP check with cookie/session checking. If your project is for some reason limited for this then your solution is okay too, I'm fine doing it that way, increasing the value of votes field and checking session/cookie. Hi, The best way to control how a user can vote is to only let him/her vote if they're logged in, in addition to a cookie and session flags (or is anonymous voting required?). Otherwise they can vote again and again if they clear the browser cache (or if they use another browser). For sanity purposes, votes should be recorded as separate entries in the database, containing the vote value (upvote or downvote), user id, date and time, resource id. Best, Sergiu
