Create notification system ( activity steams ), codeigniter

I am looking for a notification system similar as Facebook's, that will keep the activity steams of user. So f.e when a employee adds a new order notify user1 or user_group 1 etc. I have no idea which technology will be the best rest http polling some other services like [login to view URL] ? Give me your thought's on that.
