Hi. I have a lot of experience in C programming and believe I understand your requirements clearly. Given that your calculator is already implemented, I would propose to replace the numerical storage and arithmetic back-end with the GNU Multi-precision Arithmetic Library (GMP) to support arbitrary precision of both integers and rational numbers.
