you are in the driver’s seat of an organization by adopting the role of an owner/entrepreneur of a business. This assignment will illustrate the difficulties in tailoring the organizational structure to the type of business, size, and life cycle of the company. For this assignment, you are encouraged to incorporate aspects from Module 2 (i.e. mission, purpose and operational goals of the organization) and Module 3 (i.e. changes in organizational structure). Read the activity “Chapter 3 Workbook: You and Organizational Structure,” at the end of Chapter 3 in your textbook (Daft & Armstrong, 2015). Select one organization of the possible choices (i.e. copy printing, travel agency, sports rental, or bakery) and answer the following questions: What would be the purpose of your company? What specific operational activities are needed to fulfill the purpose of your organization? According to these operational activities, create an organizational structure (chart) and make clear how each departmental grouping will be responsible for those activities. Imagine that you are in the third year of operation with success so far. You are considering expanding the business by adding another location. What are the potential challenges you will face? Draw a chart with your new structure. In your fifth year, you have five locations in two cities. Update your organizational chart. How can you control and coordinate these locations? Picture that, in your 20th year, you have expanded to 25 locations in five provinces. Update your organizational chart again and indicate how the communication will flow. What challenges are you facing with this new structure?
