Do you really need to have a full custom version implemented? There are open source versions available which can fixed as per requirements if needed. Do you want to plugin the spark sql based interface to any of the BI tools or some other use-case? I have over 6+ yrs of experience in development projects with one of my project involving exposing SQL on Spark interface backed by a REST api instead of Hive database. For this I forked the Apache spark and did the implementation changes with Apache Spark code to support this.
