This is a data set of death rates by cause and state. Your job with this one is to determine which 5 states (in order) are the safest to live in…..a simple request but there are lots of variables.
-What I expect from you:
• A comprehensive model (or models) which satisfy the requirements outlined above
• You may use any software you want; C++, MATLAB, and Excel are the preferred choices
• If you use C++ or MATLAB, please forward your code as well as your output
• A brief explanation of the assumptions you have made and why you made them and, of course, your rankings
• You may come up with multiple models…..don’t feel that you have to look at this just one way
• Remember, the objective here is to make it definable, defendable, and believable; just have a clearly traceable path from where you started to where you ended up
-A few points to remember:
• You may not need to (and probably won’t) use all of the data when performing your analysis; however, if you omit data, list the reason why you have done this
• You may recognize other patterns in the data set, feel free to act on these as required….just make sure you explain what you have done and why
• This is not overly difficult analysis to perform…the real challenge is making your assumptions and other choices
• Send your analysis, along with an explanation of what you did and why.
• There are thousands of correct answers to this problem. It is more important to me to see how you think and approach this problem (the real takeaways from this course) rather than getting a “perfect” answer.

After having a glance at your file, I think that the first step would be to calculate probabilities of each death cause for each state by using a Poisson distribution. Lets have a discussion.
