"Unfortunately, (appname) has stopped" error on android device (kivy mobile development)

Used Kivy to write a python program that involves bluetooth connection and communication with an external device. When trying to deploy the app to an android tablet using buildozer, I get the error: "Unfortunately, (appname) has stopped." Is this a software compatibility error? Have tried to deploy to Marshmallow and KitKat operating systems (API level 23 and 19 respectively). Also used NDK version 13b.
