INTRODUCTION
We run a VPN service for end-users (using OpenVPN on Linux servers). We’re looking for a sysadmin to setup a solution to help us block bittorrent traffic on our network.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
1) Setup firewall rules to block bittorrent traffic.
We've found the following two options already, just suggestions, you pick whichever method you think is most suitable.

Ideally we'd like the option to only block traffic in one direction, such as blocking only outgoing traffic. (to prevent users from publishing content through out network, but allow downloading) Please state if this is feasible.
Please comment on what kind of performance hit we should expect.
Please also comment on what's involved to later block other file-sharing protocols besides bittorrent.
ENVIRONMENT
Ubuntu 8
We use iptables
We'll provide a test server for you to work on where you'll have full root access and can take it down any time you need to. We'll wipe the server when you're done.
YOUR DELIVERABLES
A document with a complete checklist of steps so we can setup this solution on other servers. Make sure it's a complete list, including any steps like installing dependencies (ie: if we need to compile anything, list steps to install the compiler, build, etc.). Each step should list the exact command we need to type. Make sure the solution will be loaded automatically when the server is rebooted.
