America's sojourn into space took a new turn in the 1950s. With the war ended, it was a period of renewed hope and global recovery. All eyes were set upon the prospects of the future, with space providing a promising and beautiful vista for exploration, which was brought about by the US engineering innovations during the war, and better still, the competitive resilience of an adversary, former ally, Russia, urging them on.
There was a sudden increase in space exploration initiatives. All over the country, launch sites grew in numbers. America and Russia made quantum progress in this venture all through the 1950s and 1960s. The elaborate expansion of these space programs however came to an end in 1969, when America's Apollo II set foot on the moon. This feat made such a large number of sites desolate and most had to be closed down.
