I have Ajax filters on a page which works with the standard WP blog posts and 3 custom post types (4 resources type) which is one of the dropdowns in the filter. The other one is categories. In the results there's a section showing 2 featured categories and below all the other posts (loading only WP posts by default) and it's loaded using masonry layout.
