Development of Artistic Web App concerning 1D cellular automata

This project is an artistic web application to be exhibited soon, that started being developed using PHP. The idea behind it is to simulate an elementary (one-dimensional) cellular automaton, whose generations (rows) are being filled up alternately by the user and the computer. Resembling a single-player game against the computer.

I already have the layout figured, but I’m new in PHP so I need some help with the automaton’s algorithm and database.
