Checking for active java plugin

I need a code/script in php or javascript to check if the java is installed and prompt enduser if the applet cannot as the java plugin is missing or not compatible. The site I am working on needs to run a java applet for the information to be decrypted client side. I am doing my programming in php/html.
However, I may not be able to release the applet for testing.
If really need be, I need to check with my client if they allow me to release to whoever I awarded the job to.
