Inventory Management System for Rental Business

We are a cinema camera rental house that would like to create an inventory system that would allow us to keep track of our inventory with a barcode system to check out and check in equipment. We are using a shopify site to set up an online booking service for our customers and we saw they offer a barcode system for a monthly payment. The problem is that we can't barcode multiple products of the same model. Only one barcode for one model of product. We want to see if there is an option to create a separate system out of Shopify, using SQL database, or any other alternative. If this new system is able to link to our Shopify site when adding more products to the site, we are interested in this approach. But we accept having a separate system as well.
