Customise existing PHP Code

I am looking for some PHP code which will dynamically display the contents of a folder and subfolders allowing the user to be able to search across all folders.
I do have the base PHP code which allows a user to browse through a folders structure and download files. This, I am sure could be adapted to have the additional functionality of a search facility.
The code I have at the moment only works if the [login to view URL] file is placed in the top level folder where the files are. I would like this amended so that it displays the contents of another folder without any web files (.html, .php etc).
