Modify a plugin's behavior

I want to modify a relatively simple plugin for Wordpress. (attached)
This plugin has the ability to consider previously published posts as "eligible" as well as recycling previously published posts. (two functions that need to be altered).
When it does either function, it simply updates the published date of the post, and re-publishes it, effectively moving to the "most recent" post.
What I want it to do is to first, save the post to draft status, THEN change the date and republish the post.
I need these posts to actually "publish" from a draft status so that my social media plugin recognizes it as a "new post" and pushes it out to social media platforms.
