Função para Deletar PHP usando XML

Tenho um XML no formato.

partes do XML;

preciso pegar o ID do item ex: <variable name="id" type="int">12979</variable>

deletar o item inteiro que seria:

<variable name="pos" type="int">0</variable>

<variable name="count" type="int">98</variable>

<variable name="max_count" type="int">100</variable>

Do XML.

Lembrando que vou colocar uma sequencia para deletar no XML de IDS.

Me indicaram usar o simplexml_load_file mas não deu tempo para fazer.
