Collectible Items Website (user-driven database)

I need a site designed that will allow for a user-driven database of collectible items (by category). Items need to be able to be added and edited by registered users only (although non-registered can view the items), and the admin needs to be able to approve the items users add before they go live. Each item will be presented on it's own page with at least 2 different images of the item (if available), along with several fields of information displayed neatly. For each item, all registered users need to be able to indicate if they have that item, want that item, or have access to that item (they don't have to enter anything, they just need to have these 3 options available to them). The location of the users who have/want/can get each item should show up on a map on that item's page (perhaps google maps), color-coded to indicate have/want/can get status. There should also be a place for users (again, registered only) to rate each item...and there should be an automatically updated display of the top 5 or 10 rated items somewhere on the main page. Simple stats should also be shown on each item's page indicating how many users have the item, how many want the item, and how many can get the item. Users must then be allowed to contact each other to pursue the items they're looking for from the people who have them, but only registered users should be able to see contact info for other users. I will also be looking to have a phpbb forum attached to the site, so you'll need to keep that in mind in terms of the database, so that it can be easily integrated. The site should also be designed with good SEO in mind.
If I'm not mistaken, this might be doable with Joomla + SOBI2, but since I'm not versed in Joomla, I'm not certain. If it CAN be done in Joomla, I'd like it done with Joomla 1.0.x, as I already have a template picked out that I'd like to use. If this is not possible in Joomla, or you simply prefer to take a different approach, please be aware that I'll be looking for good DESIGN as well (along with the needed functionality). I can send some ideas, along with some images that I'd like the design to incorporate, over to anyone who's interested. The functionality is far more critical than the design, but I'm still looking for both.
