Optimizing Crop Production Potential in Balance with Environmental Enhancement
This project will provide support information (references, websites, summaries) for a potential myriad of teaching/training modules that are integrated crop production focussed. Primarily fertility, soil science, crop, disease, weed, insect, abiotic stress, etc., etc. management. The primary goal is to gather information specific to various modules that will be useful directly to growers and consultants providing expertise and advice to farmers. Information should be gathered from global sources even though the modules will be North America focussed. Main crops will be wheat (other cereals), canola, soybeans (other legumes), alfalfa and corn.
Initial projects would dive into:
(1) Management of the Nitrogen Cycle on farm - specific focus on nitrogen loss mechanism management.
(2) On Farm Water Use Efficiency - how to grow more crop per inch of crop available water.
(3) Balancing nutrients with water use efficiency - water drives everything so how do we balance water for optimal efficiency
(4) Managing Immobile nutrients - specifically P, K and Mg.
(5) Soil pH - correcting low pH and adjusting high pH. Calcium and Acid sources and management.
(6) Micronutrient management for optimal yield/quality.
(7) Understanding Cation Exchange Capacity and % Base Saturation
(8) Nutrient ratios and balances critical to crop production efficiency. Let's start with N:S and N:K.
(9) Many others will be unearthed as we move forward.
