I have worked on many 'socket' programming projects in C#.NET. We can put some encryption/decryption in the stream, if you would like or need. Depending on whether this will be 'intranet' or 'internet'. Or how much security you will need. Another option is to use certificates. I'm not sure what else will make me stand out from the crowd of other developers.

My idea for transferring complex objects would be to send them as serialized JSON strings. I write tests, comment code, follow style guidelines and best practices.
