Hello, I am a professional web developer. I work with Moodle every day. I develop plugins, customize them and add new features to the system. Looking at your request, I can think of a solution to integrate the Google places API to your sing up form using JS Modules. I didn't decide on where to put it though, the best way possible is to set it in the header (additional files and scripts) then allow the API to manage the city field (input). Of course this way Moodle won't get affected and this in my opinion and experience is the best way to go. So, even if you decide to upgrade your current version to a newer version, it will be simple and cleaner than making some changes to the core component of singup (login). The feedback thing, I think it will be easier for me regarding my experience in handling plugins and making changes to them. I will be very glad to work with you and finish this project.
