Fix performance issues on nginx php-fpm EC instance

I'm setting up a server on a medium instance on amazon EC/VPC with mysql in a small RDS and have some test sites running.
Running an AB test from another server is giving some poor results. It's fast with a single user for testing, but slows right down when more requests hit the server. I have magento, expressionengine and wordpress test sites running. These all run fine on my apache server with no slow down when the visitors get high, so I'm looking for someone with experience with nginx/php-pfm/amazon ec who can fix these issues.
I need a fast server that can handle plenty of visitors.

if both servers apache and nginx based server running from identical instances on amazon, then for sure I can make nginx based server to work more faster then apache! I can do this.
