Hi there, I have already developed a similar application but with rich GUI. I have used Stack Mob for my data store. I can complete your project in 15-20 days as you have asked to use XMPP. I have used threads and java async methods in my project. If you want to I can do your project linking it with cloud data store, the same way I did.
