debug grails deploy to tomcat - infinite redirect at auth/login

I need help debugging a grails v2.5.6 application that deploys to tomcat but redirects infinitely instead of displaying the login form. The work needs to be done by sharing my screen because the code owner wants to keep the code on its server.

I have access to the source code. The tomcat is installed in my home directory. The only change from the default tomcat settings are the security block to handle HTTPS requests. Otherwise, all configuration comes from the ROOT.war.
