We need a Civil Engineer but don't know if we can afford one. We hired a man who represented himself as a General Contractor to rebuild a balcony attached to our second floor bedroom in our townhouse/condo (Sandpiper Bay Villas, Pt. St. Lucie, FL). We emptied out my husband's 401K account to pay this man for his services and upon completion found out that he was not a contractor and did not permit the job. Now we have to hire a Civil Engineer to inspect the construction and make sure it was built to code as he claimed. We also must obtain a permit for the construction (after the fact) to satisfy the City of Port St. Lucie or we will have to go to court for violation of same. Can anybody help us out here? We have absolutely no idea what this will cost but paid $20,000 for the above mentioned work. If we cannot do this we will have to sell our house. Thanks!
