CHAPTER ONE
“Can’t you move this car a little bit faster?” I yelled at the cab driver. “I am in a hurry and it’s a matter of life and death.”
He made no move at all to move faster; in fact it was like I was talking to myself. I opened my mouth to yell once more but as I looked at the driving mirror, I saw the red eyes embedded in a fat, red face glaring at me. Just the ice in the stare sealed my lips.
I was on my way to one St. Philips Hospital where my closest friend Adana, lay dying. I didn’t know what was wrong with her neither did I know why I was needed so urgently; although we had been very close, we had lost contact over the years and the fault was hers. When we left high school, we had exchanged e-mail addresses, which were as at then, the fastest means of communication. That was before the advent of mobile phones. We had been emailing each other often until she had gained admission into the university. The mails that were formally an everyday affair reduced to a trickle.
At first, I thought it was the stress of school because as at then; I hadn’t been offered any admission. But when I entered the university and found out that I could co-ordinate my registration and lectures with going to a café, I then believed Adana was no longer keen on mailing me. After a while, she stopped altogether.
