File Encryption Detection Software

High level Brief:

We run a national IT Managed service business and we require the ability to check if files have been encrypted and sending an email if it detects encryption. Lots of people have already achieved this but there doesn’t seem to be any documentation anywhere for it. We have had differing opinions on how this can be achieved but nothing concrete yet. It can’t be too difficult due to the amount of people that have already achieved this hence why we are offering $300 dollars to anyone who just gives the solution but generally we would like someone to be able to develop us a proof of concept in whatever language they think is required C# preferred. Frills and application wrapper is not required here just the proof of concept to show it works via the chosen technology.

Requirements:

-Exe that scans certain pre-defined folders and detects if they have been changed or not (i.e can tell it’s been encrypted) i.e just 1 or 2 test folders

-Then an email to be sent to an SMTP IP address (no TLS required) if it detects files have been encrypted

-Happy to take a suggestions but something like Shadow Copy / C# “FileSystemWatcher object” to be used to detect what files have changed

-I would imagine It needs to cache the last 3 or 4 files to compared them against (i.e to detect if the composition of the files have changed to prove that they have been encrypted)

-Then needs to send an email to say it has detected encryption

*** This does not need to be commercial just proof of concept at this stage

Considerations:

- We are happy to accept use of open source tools as long as we can reuse them in a commercial application

- Please do not just auto response with advertisement of a bland service as these requests will just go straight in the bin

- You must in your response give some details of how you would attack this (i.e not just tell us what a great developer / company you are)

- We are happy to pay top money if for assured delivery, this will definitely lead to more work in this area for successful candidate

- Happy for this to be an individual / company that gets the business

- Even if you do not develop the final solution we will pay $300 just for information that leads us to the target state (i.e tells us how it can be done)

This will definitely lead to more work In this field and others with a growing company with $5m turnover.
