You will formulate a question for this assignment, suitable for the quantitative paradigm. The questions will arise from practice based problems or your preparation for this research project (New diagnosis to Leukamia) . You will then conduct a systematic search of the literature, select a paper and conduct a systematic appraisal. Within this assignment you will demonstrate learning outcomes:
1. Conceptualise problems and formulate research questions; 2. Critically analyze the assumptions, theories and techniques underpinning research methodologies and designs and to evaluate the usefulness for specific questions or foci of study; 3. Critically appraise research reports using a transparent systematic approach.
Word limit for is 2000 words, this excludes citations, quotes, tables, figures, your search strategy table, your systematic appraisal tool.
Provide written evidence of the following.
1. A Clear focused research question with logical justification of components supported by literature and relevance to practice or research interests explained.
1. A Systematic Search Strategy of a standard suitable for a Cochrane Systematic Review. Illustrate with tables and/or mind maps. Include the following: Justification of choice of databases searched (Google Scholar can be used to evaluate your search but we suggest that you do not use it for your main search) Explanation of various processes taken including refinement of search terms, synonyms, abbreviations, Mesh terms, thesaurus and use of database specific limits, Explain how you combined terms, explain your Boolean operators. Explain how you evaluated the success of the stages of the research strategy. Include tables of your search results with numbers of hits for each stage. Illustrate search results with Venn diagram or flow chart. Explain and justify your process for selecting the paper
2. Systematic Critical Appraisal. Provide evidence of a detailed systematic critical appraisal of paper that you selected. You may elect to follow an appraisal tool in which case you must cite the source, and justify your choice. You may make modifications to the criteria in which case provide a full explanation. For some forms of research you may have to devise your own appraisal tool. Quote the section/s of the article that are relevant to each criterion and provide your interpretation using evidence from the wider literature to support your argument. This systematic appraisal should be understandable to an audience who have not read the original article. The quotes do not contribute to the word count.
3. Interpretation. Provide a summary of your critique of the paper. Use tables or flow diagrams if necessary to summarise, indicate if these tables are a direct copy from the original article. Consider the findings of your appraisal in light of key contemporary literature and/practice. Ensure you include:
What the hematologist knowledge of the topic was
What this paper adds to his knowledge
Methodological strengths
Methodological weaknesses
Discussion of the findings in relation to other research
Implications for your research or practice development
