Academic Research Essay
Write a five-page (1500 word) academic research paper based on a primary source such as a speech or manifesto. In your essay, evaluate the progress that has been made toward achieving the goals put forth in the document. Use a minimum of five reliable sources to support your thesis and document the use of these sources according to MLA guidelines. Here are three possible topics for your paper.
==================================================================
1. Seneca Falls Declaration – Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Seneca Falls Convention, Seneca, NY, 1848.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote the “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” in 1848, a mirror to the “Declaration of Independence” that takes women’s rights into consideration. The world has changed a lot since 1848, particularly the status of women. Write an essay in which you discuss the position of women today in the United States from your perspective. Include your view of which “Injuries and Usurpations” have been addressed and which have not as well as which “Resolutions” have or have not been achieved. Use a minimum of 5 secondary sources to support your thesis.

2. “I Have a Dream” – Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington, D.C., August 28, 1963.
In 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr., made a speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. entitled “I Have a Dream.” In this speech, given at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in America, he forecasts a future in which Blacks and Whites can live harmoniously in this country as equals. Write an essay in which you evaluate the progress the country has made toward this goal in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the disaster in Louisiana and Mississippi. Use a minimum of five secondary sources to support your thesis.

3. The Space Shuttle "Challenger" Tragedy Address – President Ronald Reagan, Washington, D.C., January 28, 1986.
On January 28, 1986 America was shocked by the destruction of the space shuttle Challenger, and the death of its seven crew members. President Ronald Regan addressed the nation and declared, “We'll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.” Write an essay in which you evaluate the progress that NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has made in the past twenty years and NASA’s plans for future space exploration. In the light of history, to what extent has President Reagan’s promise been fulfilled? Should this country continue to pursue his vision? Use a minimum of five secondary sources to support your thesis.
