an issue with site navigation in FTP

It's very simple. I designed a website and uploaded to an FTP (through DreamHost). The issue I'm having is that I'm trying to make the URL (link) of the home page read without the "/index" extension. Let's say the name of the site is johnsmith.com. If you navigate to it online, you will get the home page (URL - [url removed, login to view]), but once you navigate from there to any other page on this site, and then try to go back to the home page....you can't go back to [url removed, login to view], you can only go back [url removed, login to view] If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know!
