compiling and open source code project in Linux

We need to build and compile an open source code project - There is an open source project called HFP-nohands, in Linux, and you can find it in this link: [login to view URL] There is a built package here: [login to view URL]~sebastian-ruehl/+archive/nohands, for reference. We need to modify a few lines in the code and install the software. We need an explanation and instructions on how it's done. It's not suppose to be difficult, the problem is we are Linux newbies, and need some help figuring it out, for a Studential project. Thanks
