I would recommend using Adafruit CC3000 shield for wifi. I've been working with this one with no issues. I have no problem on doing the firmware for the Arduino. I would also recommend using a RTC module with a battery (those are cheap modules), so you don't lose track of the time in case of a power failure. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Regarding your project, I think you are missing one component like an RTC (real time clock) in order to know the date and exact time of recording. On the other hand, you could use the official wifi shield or a Bluetooth shield to perform the wirelessly communication.
