コンテスト概要

We are building a new mobile app for our patients that will allow online booking, prescription requests and other tasks.

We have created mockups of each screen and we need a designer to make them look engaging and beautiful. We know what we want on each screen, we just do not know what the feel and look should be. Someone with experience in taking mockups and converting to finished designed screens would be idea. Our development team will then take the designs and build to them.

There are 10 sections to the app, each with on average 5 screens per section - so approximately 50 screens in total to design with the same consistent theme. We are posting 4 of the screen types as a competition. You can enter this competition by taking 1,2,3 or 4 of the sample screens and showing us what you can do.

The winner will be awarded €200 and will be then selected for the full design project of the 50 screens which we are prepared to pay approx €2,000 to be completed. (So total value of winning this competition is approximately €2,200). We have a short turn around time so ideally we choose the winner by Monday the 12th, award the project and have the screens complete within 7 days with minimal iterations.

Can you make these screens look better, more engaging and more professional?

“Bogdan is one of the most gifted designers i've ever had the pleasure of working with. His eye for UX detail is truly excellent. The most impressive thing about him is that he continues to 'fight for the customer', and always keeps their experience front and centre. ”

First of all, congrats to winner. Really a great design work.

No offence but I am a bit disappointment with the approach of contest holder. It was clearly stated in the brief that
"We have created mockups of each screen and we need a designer to make them look engaging and beautiful. We know what we want on each screen, we just do not know what the feel and look should be."

Which clearly means the UX doesn't have to be change. But anyways I am happy that in the end a really great work was picked.

The winner's designs do look beautiful and pleasing to eyes. The focus should always be on user experience. UI is just one of many parts of UX. First you improve UX then add a layer of stylings over it which one can do very easily once he has covered up the basics of an app's design.

Also, the client did not state age group that is gonna use it the most. The style of greatly depends on the context of the use and type of user

    PART 9 / 9

Stop looking on dribbble for good design. 90% of dribbble shots are USELESS in real scenarios. Dribbble is used for spreading beatiful designs not functional designs. Dribbble shots look good but the clients and users want the design to work correctly, not to look good.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

WE ARE DESIGNERS, WE SOLVE PROBLEMS. It doesn't matter if there are aesthetic problems or functionalities it's our duty to do our best while designing.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your effort and for your designs. You guys are amazing and we're all here to learn and compete. We need to become better and we need to do better.

    Yours,

    Bogdan Duma

Good suggestions bro. You are very right. Every app comes with its own problem and should be solved in a unique way. Dribbble only someone else's solution to someone else's problem.

    PART 1 / 9

    Hello everyone,

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE FOLLOWING TEXT AS I'VE SACRIFICED A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO WRITE THIS. I'M DOING THIS TO HELP YOU BECOME A BETTER DESIGNER (AND/OR A BETTER HUMAN BEING).

First of all, I'd like to thank you for joining me in this contest. To be honest, the amount of entries is insane and that's really good. I'm going to point out some facts to help you understand better what you've done WRONG and what I've done RIGHT.

You can take my words as insults (if you're easily offended) or you can sit back and reflect about this text and ask yourself if I'm right or not. Either way, you're gonna remember me :)

During my career I've won a lot of contests (not only here on Freelancer) and I can say that after almost every one of them the other participants were not happy and had something bad to say about me or the contest holder. It looks like it happend again.

    PART 2 / 9

The description tells you there are mockups of each screen and they need to be transformed into a more pleasant design, a professional one. Right ?

Well, if you were a real designer you'd notice those screens are not real screens and you can barely call them mockups. The truth is they are just some rough sketches / ideas MADE FOR US TO UNDERSTAND the purpose of this app.

Any real (good) designer in his right minds will tell you that amount of information you saw in those 4 screens need to be structured in more than 4 screens :) If you don't believe me, ask designers you look up to. Ask some professionals and you'll see that I'm right.

    PART 3 / 9

    Take "Appointments_5_pick_slot.fw.png" as example:

Beside header and bottom navigation we have a list of doctors, for a specifc doctor we have a list of dates, and for each specific date we're gonna have a list of available slots to pick from.

If you were a great designer you'd know all those things can not fit in a single screen without making it overwhelming. As UX Designers, one of our jobs is to make sure the user don't feel lost while using an app or "digesting" a particular screen.

! ! ! ! THAT WAS MISTAKE #1 a lot of you did while "designing".

TAKE NOTES: If you want the user to engage with this app you have to walk him through the journey of booking an appointment. There are a lot of clickable/tappable elements so the user can EASILY get lost. You have to avoid this.

So, If you used this approach you've done a terrible job allowing user to deal with that much information on a single screen.

    PART 4 / 9

Using the logo on every screen is useless. Why would you do that ? It's enough to have it on the splash screen. The user already knows what app he's using, you don't have to remind him every 2 seconds.

The Appointments screen needs AT LEAST 2 screens as well, one for Upcoming appointments and one for the old ones.

    PART 5 / 9

    DON'T SHOW THEM ALL TOGETHER.
Maybe you're asking: Why not ?

Because when reaching the appointment screen the user WANTS to see he's current / active appointments NOT cancelled or old ones.

The user doesn't give a s#it about the appoinments he cancelled. So you need to get rid of them and place them somewhere else. They are not important to the user. Showing them together will make them feel they are all at the same level of important and guess what ? THEY ARE NOT.

! ! ! ! THAT WAS MISTAKE #2 a lot of you did while "designing".

TAKE NOTES: You have to show the user what he's expecting to see when he clicks/taps on a particular menu item. Ask yourself: If you tap the "Appointments" button, do you want to see cancelled appointments ? Of course not, you want to see your current / active ones. So the cancelled (or old) appointments can live somewhere else NOT TOGETHER with the ones you're interested in.

    PART 6 / 9

! ! ! ! MISTAKE #3 a lot of you did is taking everything for granted.

Don't follow every word and don't get stuck to the screens contest holder shared with you. You are desginers, your job is to think outside the box and to understand WHAT'S THE REAL PROBLEM the client and its user has.

Don't just design for the sake of design. Try to understand what you're doing and question everything. THERE HAS TO BE A REASON BEHIND EVERY DESIGN ELEMENT.

I can ask a lot of you why you've designed the way you did and you won't have a good answer. That's because you're trying to go with the flow.

    PART 7 / 9

! ! ! ! MISTAKE #4 a lot of you did is copying others, especially entries with 4 or 5 stars.

Stop copying and start creating. It's ok to get inspired and see how others are doing things. To be honest I had a look over every entry submitted to this contest and I tried to understand the reason of your design decisons.

Those are the main / huge mistakes a lot of designers did. There are more mistakes, smaller but they are still mistakes and I don't want to write more about them.

    PART 8 / 9

NOW LET'S FOCUS ON HOW YOU CAN IMPROVE YOURSELF

I'd like to start by saying I'm sorry if what I already said offended you.

! ! ! ! TIPS TO BECOME BETTER AT WHAT YOU DO:

    1. Stop hating me (or other designers) who did better than you.

    2. Stop blaming others for your failures. Own it. Understand it. Learn from it.

    3. Stop copying other and start create your own style.

    4. I'm sure you want to be the original, not a copy, so act like one.

    5. Stop following stupid trends.

    6. Start reading about what really works in design.

    7. Think about your users. Design for them, not for you.

    8. Think about how can you solve a problem without creating new ones.

    9. Stop focusing JUST on user interfaces. A good looking app with bad functionalities is useless.
User wants to use it, not to admire your app :)

    10. The user wants to get things done. Help him with your design.

Design is not drawing, it's not art. So stop decorating and start solving problems.
