Digital Artist for Multi-Book Deal - must be able to draw realistic, elegant cats (& other animals)

Enter this competition only if you're interested in being awarded a multi-book deal. Up to 15 books, approx 20 landscape format illustrations in each. $USD2000 per book. Guaranteed national exposure for your work in Australia. But there are specific skills the artist must have, & this is what the competition is intended to find.

This competition has 2 elements:
1. Can you accurately recreate the cat in the sample images? Step 1 is to present this specific cat in a range of realistic poses. B/w sketches are fine, but include at least 1 colour sample that shows her face & body markings.
- She is a real-life Bengal cat, whose head reaches her girl's knees.

2. Can you accurately recreate the young woman in the sample images? Step 2 is to present her in the dress for which a photo has been provided, in a range of realistic poses. B/w sketches are fine, but include at least 1 colour sample where her face is clearly shown.
- She is a tall, slim young French woman, aged about 18. She lives in Art Deco era Paris, but she & the cat have adventures around the world. The ability to draw Art Deco fashion with an eye for detail for the fall of the fabric, the texture & small details will also be an essential skill, as this character will appear in lovely outfits in all her scenes.

If you can accurately recreate these 2 characters in a range of poses, all other characters & everything else in the series will be up to you & me to create. But you must be able to draw the 2 main characters as they have already been depicted.

Adding some background to your sketches will show me more fully what you can do. The backgrounds do not have to be detailed & as long as they're from the Art Deco era I don't mind what they are or the country or countries in which you set them. BUT! Bear in mind that I MUST have a digital artist who can draw & paint digitally, not simply cut & paste elements onto backgrounds.

- When considering backgrounds, you should know that books will be set in France, Italy, Morocco, China, Japan, India, Africa, Australia, the US, etc, so there's no limit on what you can create for your competition entry as long as it's in the Art Deco era. There will also be one book set in Space & on an alien planet, in the Steampunk style as well as Art Deco.

More broadly, if you are awarded the contract for this series, you should also know that some characters will be based on real-life people, so some ability to create photo-realistic characters will definitely help. Many different animals will also feature, including wolves, foxes, cranes, elephants, tigers, lions, monkeys, a large white standard poodle, birds, all sorts of insects, etc. They'll need to be presented in a realistic manner, rather than cutsie cartoon animals. No Disney, no naive children's book look. This series will feature simple but elegant, sophisticated images in the French Art Deco style.

I want to develop a strongly collaborative relationship with the artist, who can follow a detailed brief but also contribute their own ideas to make each image the most beautiful it can be.

Feel free to provide links to relevant pre-existing art in your portfolio, if you think it will help your entry. I will enter into discussions with the competition winner to see if we're going to be able to work together for an extended period. But if you're a close runner-up you might still be considered for this or other book projects coming up.

I know the skills I'm looking for aren't common. But in return I offer 1) the prize money for winning the competition, 2) a multi-book contract, & 3) guaranteed national exposure for your work in Australia via a nationally-distributed glossy magazine & a large bookshop chain that has undertaken to stock & promote the series.

I don't care if you have no prior experience illustrating books. I do care that you're a talented digital artist, able to draw and paint to a detailed brief & with the enthusiasm to create something we're both proud of.

      Book 1 has 28 pages, and the artist and I are working on the final illustration right now. I always provide the image for Page 1 of every book, because it's a portrait of Calypso (who is a real cat). I will also provide final image for every book. The new artist will take over from Book 2, and all illustrations will be in landscape format. Book 2 is almost finalized, and will have around 32-34 pages (so 15 or 16 landscape images).     About entry no 36-my intention was to visually describe Art Deco interior and to construct one intimate atmosphere between girl character and her cat.Accuracy of girl portrait and cat figure were not important to me in this art work.

      I understand what you're saying, Mihajlo, so thank you for the clarification. The most important thing for me, at this point, is to find an artist who can draw Tallulah and Calypso in a range of original poses and situations, but in a seamless manner from Book 1, so readers don't even notice that a new artist has taken over the series.

      Hi Luis. I won't close the contest early. There are several very strong contenders, but new people are submitting great art every day. The most important element will be your ability to draw Tallulah and Calypso as they appear in Book 1, but in original poses and situations. Once you've got the 2 main characters nailed, everything else will be up to you and me to create.

Many talented artists are struggling with the requirement to draw elegant, life-like cats but it's an essential skill for the artist who takes over this series. If you can draw the 2 main characters in original poses, but looking as they have already been created in Book 1, that will be terrific.

    Are you looking for exact re-creation of the previous artist illustration style, or we have some artistic freedom? Not when it comes to the characters but the illustration style itself.

      The style for the series is French Art Deco. But every book will be set in a different country (one even on a different planet, in Steampunk style as well as Art Deco). So a simple, elegant style is what I'm after throughout the series. But other than the 2 main characters, everything else will be up to the artist and me to collaborate on, within the constraints of Art Deco style. I hope this helps.

      I'll look forward to seeing your submission, Erickson. I like the portraits in your portfolio & you're clearly a talented artist. The thing to remember is the importance of recreating Tallulah (the girl) & Calypso (the cat) as they already exist in Book 1. If you can draw elegant, life-like looking cats you'll be able to draw Calypso, because then it's just a matter of getting her face & colouring right. Many people are struggling with the Art Deco look of Tallulah so it's worth taking the time to examine her features carefully. If you're able to recreate the 2 main characters in original poses, plus show you're comfortable with Art Deco style, absolutely everything else in the series will be up to you & me to create in collaboration, although I will always want a more realistic & sophisticated look rather than a naive, or children's book, or manga style. The series is set in the 1920s Art Deco era in different locations around the world. I hope this helps!

      Hi Modh. Yes, the artist for Book 1 is outstanding and will be a tough act to follow. But because of illness she cannot continue, hence my hunt for a replacement artist. There must be someone just as good! Good luck with your submission, I'll look forward to seeing it. You'll just need to remember that the 2 main characters need to be depicted in original poses, but looking like they do in Book 1. I know that's hard to do, and many talented artists just draw in a different style, I understand that. But this is what I need for this project. If it helps, for reference I very much like the work of French Art Deco artists Cheri Herouard, Georges Leonnec & Maurice Milliere, and it's this type of style I'm wanting to create for the series.     I do like a lot this project, I see you got a wide vision of this and could be really big, but also the artist must compromise to the entire series of books.

    I don't have exactly the style of drawing that you require but what I do understand is that illustration is an art that becomes technical and the artist must adapt to the circumstances and explore new horizons. I will participate in this contest following all the guidelines that you required in the brief, I will take my time to present my entries in a professional way and respecting the original style and we will see if I am a strong candidate for this project.

      Hello Federico. The look of the 2 main characters for the series is already set in Book 1 & must continue throughout the series. All other characters & elements will be up to the artist & me to create together. The 2 main characters live in 1920s Art Deco Paris but have adventures around the world. So as long as the backgrounds look Art Deco, I don't mind where you set your trial images. The colours for Book 1 are often blue because a lot of this book is set in the water. But most of Book 2 will be set in the Arizona desert so there will be lots of burnt oranges. So the requirement is that the new artist matches the style created in Book 1. The artist for Book 1 & I spent a long time getting it just right. But there will be different characters to create besides the main 2, different colours, different countries for every other book.       Hello contest holder, according to your answer to this thread. Is neccesary to stick to the already style epicted on the previous books? or each artist may add their own perspective, to painting style, colours scheme?

    Just to clarify for all contest applicants: this series is entirely illustrated. Therefore, even though the visual reference I have provided is a photograph of an Art Deco dress, it is my expectation that you will provide your illustrated interpretation of that dress, rather than a photo-shopped version. Throughout the series, to help you understand the look I am after, I will always send you a range of visual references for each scene, some of which will be photographs, some old fashion illustrations, some showing a cat in a particular pose to show you what I'm thinking for Calypso in that scene, etc. I hope this helps!
